1981-1982 Third Player Shirt
This has been the most mysterious third shirt in history - without concrete picture showing it's actual usage. However, the club did manufacture them as player shirts but not as replicas.
Prevailing knowledge of the pinstripes shirts is that they were used between seasons 1982-1985 with the Crownpaints sponsor. On the other hand, HITACHI was first appeared on Liverpool shirts in seasons 1979-1980 and 1980-1981. So what is this stuck in the middle shirt?
We know that Liverpool signed sponsorship contract with Crownpaints in season 1983, whereas HITACHI remained the commercial sponsor of Liverpool till 1982. Summing up the information, this implies the valid dating of this shirt should be season 1981-1982. As this kit should be the third kit instead of away one, it might only be worn in away ties with teams like Sunderland, Stoke City, Arsenal or Sheffield United. Again, I could not trace back any historical pictures showing actual usage, I cannot conclude whether or not such shirt was definitely worn in matches in Liverpool history.
Let's refer to the sexy Souness picture above holding the big-ears of the European Cup.
The captioned descriptions cite that Souness is picking the European Cup of 1981 (third arrival of the Cup) and wearing the "new change strip". This implies the yellow pinstriped shirt must not be dated back any earlier than May 1981.
As usual, all UMBRO era genuine player shirts come with size tag printed with WORDS instead of NUMERICS.
