1981-1982 Third Player Shirt
This has been the most mysterious third shirt in history. Before the recent prompt by my pal Quinn Lennon who has clear memory that he remembers this shirt when he watched a live match in the season 1981-1982, I nearly regard this yellow pinstriped HITACHI sponsor shirt as one produced but never used kit.
Prevailing knowledge of the pinstripes shirts is that they were used between seasons 1982-1985 with the Crownpaints sponsor. On the other hand, HITACHI was first appeared on Liverpool shirts in seasons 1979-1980 and 1980-1981. So what is this stuck in the middle shirt?
We know that Liverpool signed sponsorship contract with Crownpaints in season 1983, whereas HITACHI remained the commercial sponsor of Liverpool till 1982. Summing up the information, this implies the valid dating of this shirt should be season 1981-1982. As this kit should be the third kit instead of away one, it might only be worn in away ties against teams with red and white colour clashes.
First of all, the story must start from this  sexy Souness picture above holding the big-ears of the European Cup.
The captioned descriptions cite that Souness is picking the European Cup of 1981 (third arrival of the Cup) and wearing the "new change strip". This implies the yellow pinstriped shirt must not be dated back any earlier than May 1981.
Locating the match action photos of the yellow pinstriped HITACHI shirt might be much harder than you try to buy get this shirt!
Modern Liverpool official publications never show up any of them. I have flipped through Hamlyns, Official Annuals, Yearbooks, etc. without any fruitful outcomes.
It was only until a prompt by Quinn that he remembered this shirt clearly in an away fixture he watched in the 1981-1982 fixture.
With Quinn's confirmation, at least I am confident that  photos of the shirt can be located.
It turns out that a match action photo of Liverpool player wearing the yellow-pinstriped shirt is found in a 1981-1982 season match programme.
The yellow pinstriped shirt with HITACHI sponsor was definitely worn in the League Cup 2nd Round away leg fixture.
The match was played on 28 October 1981 at St. James Park, with Exeter City being our opponent.

The photo above shows the moment of Kevin Sheedy scoring his first goal for Liverpool
Featured Ian Rush in match action wearing the yellow pinstriped shirt with HITACHI sponsor in the 1981-1982 League Cup 4th Round played against Arsenal at Higbhury on 1 December 1981. It seems that this shirt became an exclusive away shirt for League Cup campaign as they were un-televised matches with shirt sponsorship logo allowed.

As usual, all UMBRO era genuine player shirts come with size tag printed with WORDS instead of NUMERICS.
